Police Car Built for Speed Patrol

The Avon and Somerset Constabulary police force is making serious strides in decreasing speeding traffic violations. They have purchased the Ariel Atom 3.5R for their departments. These cops are taking matters into their own hands. They hope that with faster units they'll be able to catch more speedsters and bring awareness to the tragic consequences of speeding. 

It is not necessarily news when a police force adds a supercar to the fleet…until it is a Bugatti Veyron or a frickin Ariel Atom 3.5R. The burning question, why, is easy to answer in this instance. The Ariel Atom is built in the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area, making the hypercar a perhaps peace offering? Why else would they supply the local law enforcement with something that would have little trouble overtaking a superbike?

The Porsche 919 Hybrid isn't just another racing prototype (not that Le Mans prototypes are dime-a-dozen or anything). Pond left the Navy in October of 1945, aching to jump into the booming business of commercial aviation. But the family business called him back, and -- owing to that sense of obligation ingrained in all Midwesterners -- he signed back with Advance Machine Co., an organization, started by his grandfather Merritt Pond, that built floor polishers and industrial vacuum cleaners. Pond was the eighth employee. He went from bookkeeper to salesman in just six months, and the traveling required by the job was the perfect excuse to talk his family into buying an airplane -- a Cessna 180, then a 182, then larger and larger planes. A jet came in 1970, fulfilling both Pond's overseas expansion and flying dreams.
